The 2016 Sprinter lets you choose between two powerful and reliable engine/transmission combinations. The standard powertrain is the impressive OM651 4-cylinder with 7-speed 7G-TRONIC transmission. The OM651 has passed nearly 5 million miles of endurance testing under the harshest operating conditions. The OM642 V6 with 5-speed transmission has already proven itself on the road and will remain available as an option.

OM651 2-Stage Turbo Diesel Engine

Effortlessly combine the benefits of turbocharged power, diesel fuel economy and durability in one compact package. The advanced OM651 2-stage turbo diesel engine is standard on all Sprinter Van models and features:

  • 161 hp at 3,800 rpm
  • 265 lb-ft of torque across a broad rpm range
  • Two overhead camshafts/4 valves per cylinder
  • No turbo lag, due to 2-stage exhaust gas turbocharging system
  • Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system for cleaner emissions

The OM651's 265 lb-ft of torque starts at a low 1,400 rpm, giving you ample pulling power when the light turns green, when merging onto a highway, and especially under a load. A combination of exhaust gas recirculation with two-stage cooling and the SCR technology with AdBlue® injection for the BlueTEC® engines and a particulate filter ensures clean exhaust emissions. The OM651 also delivers up to 18%7 better fuel economy over the superior efficiency of the optional 6-cylinder/5-speed combination.

OM642 6-Cylinder Diesel Engine

The proven OM642 6-cylinder diesel engine/5-speed transmission combination features:

  • 188 hp at 3,800 rpm
  • 325 lb-ft of torque across a broad rpm range
  • 2,987 cc displacement
  • Electronically controlled direct injection
  • 4 valves per cylinder
  • Fuel type: Ultra low sulfur diesel

Like the OM651, the OM642 is one of the world's cleanest running diesel engines thanks to BlueTEC® SCR technology.6 The OM642 generates power from a turbocharger as well, and peak torque comes in at low rpm—precisely when it matters most.

7G-TRONIC Transmission

Can a transmission reduce interior noise? Or lower the total cost of vehicle ownership? The standard 7-speed 7G-TRONIC transmission does all that and more. This technologically advanced transmission is the first of its kind in the segment and has been refined for maximum output and fuel efficiency. Like the outstanding optional 5-speed/6-cylinder combination, the 7G-TRONIC's shift points are perfectly mated to the OM651 diesel engine's power output.

The transmission has a lockup clutch as well, which provides a more direct connection to the vehicle's acceleration and greater agility. The seven gears improve acceleration and the short shift times make the ride smoother. The gears also create lower engine speeds, which means low fuel consumption, reduced noise, and longer service life. Plus, Sprinter Van owners receive maximum uptime from their commercial vehicle with an extended 20,000-mile service interval, resulting in lower maintenance cost for their Sprinter Van.


BlueEFFICIENCY is the term that encompasses all the fuel-saving and emission-reducing efforts Mercedes-Benz uses on the vehicle, powertrain and ancillary components. The engineers took that concept to the next level when they reviewed virtually every aspect of the 2016 Sprinter's operation. As a result, BlueEFFICIENCY is further optimized with cutting-edge features that include:

  • Regulated fuel pump: provides optimum fuel supply control, maximum admission pressure level
  • Fuel-economy rear axle: optimized gearing and ball bearings reduce rear axle friction
  • A/C compressor clutch: utilizes belt drive with overrunning clutch, only driven when active for fuel savings
  • Fuel-economy alternator: efficiency-enhanced management reduces energy demand and CO2 emissions
  • ECO steering pump: activated only when steering support is needed

These extensive measures are why the 2016 Sprinter's 2-stage turbo 4-cylinder diesel engine is delivering up to 18%7 better fuel economy over our already fuel-efficient V6 engine and 5-speed transmission and meeting the most stringent emission standards. Plus, Sprinter Van owners can achieve up to 90% lower emissions than an equivalent gasoline-powered vehicle thanks to our new Super Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV) option—which equips the Sprinter Van with the first SULEV-certified diesel engine in the world.4

Horsepower vs. Torque

Big horsepower numbers are certainly impressive. But for a commercial vehicle, it's all about torque. Simply put, horsepower is the speed of an engine, while torque is the measurement of the force an engine creates. Imagine moving a 10-pound weight one foot with the force (torque) of your arm. Horsepower would be how fast you can move it, while torque is how easily you can move it. The more torque you have, the easier it will be to move the weight. It's the same principle when you step on the gas. The more torque that's available, the easier it will be to pull a trailer or get the vehicle up and moving with a full load of cargo on board.

The 2016 Sprinter's 2-stage turbo diesel engine delivers ample torque at relatively low engine revolutions per minute (rpm), so you'll have maximum pulling power as soon as you accelerate. The torque is transferred to the 7-speed 7G-TRONIC transmission, which features technologically advanced gearing for quicker acceleration and efficient highway driving. The result is a van that delivers impressive pickup along with outstanding fuel economy.

The Load-Adaptive Electronic Stability Program ESP®2 with Trailer Stability Assist is standard on all Sprinter Van models. This innovative feature takes the vehicle load and center of gravity into account, then brakes individual wheels and reduces engine power to stabilize the vehicle.8

ESP® uses mass and center of gravity position detectors, with an additional sensor for acceleration and braking. The system utilizes steering angle and wheel speed to calculate the direction in which the driver wants to steer. If Load-Adaptive ESP® detects wheelspin, understeer or oversteer, it brakes individual wheels and reduces engine power to stabilize the vehicle. Trailer Stability Assist provides a higher safety degree during trailer operation by stopping trailer movement through brake intervention.

Continuing our heritage as the industry's safety leaders, the Sprinter Van introduces Crosswind Assist3 as a standard feature on the 2016 Sprinter. Sudden, unexpected crosswinds can sometimes cause a vehicle to leave its driving lane. At speeds over 50 mph, gentle, course-correcting brake application quickly intervenes to stabilize your Sprinter Van in strong, gusting crosswinds.

As its name implies, Crosswind Assist helps prevent all the surprises that come with intense crosswinds while driving on the highway, and it does so by making use of precision sensors of the Electronic Stability Program (ESP®), also developed and introduced by Mercedes-Benz for the first time.

By detecting sudden, strong gusts of wind which can act on the side of your Sprinter Van, Crosswind Assist helps to prevent your car from drifting out of lane. To achieve this, the brakes are applied to the wheels on the side of the vehicle facing the wind. This results in a so-called "yaw motion"—a rotational movement of the vehicle against the flow of wind—which reduces the lane displacement of your vehicle.

The need for counter-steering in response to sudden gusts is significantly reduced, relieving the strain on the driver. This is just one more way by which the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is leading the way to safety.

Passive safety systems include:

  • Three-point seat belt on every seat
  • Driver and front passenger seats with Emergency Tensioning Retractors (ETRs) and belt force limiters
  • Standard front airbags9
  • Optional thorax/window airbags9
  • Post-crash protection:
    • Electrical fuel pump and stationary heater switched off (depending on crash severity)

Highbeam Assist can take the annoyance of constantly switching between high and low beams out of your driving experience.

Highbeam Assist uses a multifunction camera located on the inside of the windshield to constantly monitor the surroundings and the traffic situation in front of the vehicle. Highbeam Assist is activated when the rotary light switch is set to "AUTO" and the high beam function of the combination switch on the steering column is switched on. At speeds above 20 mph, the system automatically switches the high beams on and off depending upon traffic ahead and oncoming vehicles.


Lane Keeping Assist is designed to recognize unintentional drifting out of a lane.

Lane Keeping Assist uses a multifunction camera in the windshield to monitor the markings on the pavement up ahead while driving. If the Sprinter Van drifts out of lane without using a turn signal, the system senses it and sends a visible and audible signal to the driver. The system is activated at speeds above 35 mph. Lane Keeping Assist is always on, but can be deactivated via a button on the dashboard.


Looking behind while changing lanes can be potentially dangerous. Mercedes-Benz engineers recognized this and developed Blind Spot Assist.

Blind Spot Assist uses four radar sensors to monitor the surroundings in a range of approximately nine feet to the sides and back of the Sprinter Van. The system begins to operate at speeds above 20 mph. Until that point, yellow control lamps in the outside rear view mirrors indicate that the system is not activated. If the system detects that another vehicle is alongside, a red triangle appears in the relevant rear view mirror. If you activate the turn signal despite the triangle, an audible signal will be triggered as well. Blind Spot Assist is always on. It can be deactivated via a button on the dashboard.


COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST is an innovative feature that enhances driving safety by helping to avoid rear-end collisions.

This feature combines a radar-based proximity warning function with the BAS® PRO Brake Assist. If the distance to the vehicle ahead drops below the safety threshold for several seconds, a warning lamp lights up in the instrument cluster. If the distance continues to decrease rapidly, an audible warning is sounded as well. At the same time, COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST activates BAS® PRO Brake Assist. This system calculates the brake pressure that would be necessary to avoid a rear-end collision. If the driver then applies the brakes sharply, BAS® PRO Brake Assist automatically boosts the brake pressure to a level appropriate for the situation. COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST can be deactivated via a button on the dashboard.

PARKTRONIC can give you parking assistance when you need it most.

PARKTRONIC warns of a possible collision when maneuvering in confined spaces at speeds up to 10 mph. Six ultrasonic sensors in the front bumper and four in the rear bumper monitor the surrounding area according to the echo sounding principle. These sensors detect the distance from other vehicles or obstacles during parking. If that distance becomes too small, PARKTRONIC sends an audible signal and LED lights on the dashboard illuminate to alert the driver.
